Chelsea just had a 2-0 victory over Luton Town to regain inspiration after 2 unbeaten matches in the Premier League 2023/24. Welcoming Wimbledon in the second round of the 2023/24 League Cup, the Blues are confident they will defeat their opponents.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino has fielded many young players and reserve players to keep the pillars strong. But he almost had to pay the price when his opponent from the 4th division suddenly took the lead.
In the 19th minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Wimbledon after a foul by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. James Tilley made no mistake on the penalty spot to open the score for the away team.
Leading a goal, Chelsea frantically pressed forward to attack. But it wasn’t until the injury time of the first half that they found the equalizer, and also from the 11m mark.
Minute 45+1, Wimbledon defender fouled Madueke in the penalty area and the referee did not hesitate to blow the whistle. The English player himself stepped up to take the penalty and he successfully equalized 1-1 for Chelsea.
Entering the second half, coach Pochettino, in turn, launched the pillars Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez on the field to strengthen the attack power for Chelsea.
And this worked. In the 72nd minute, the Wimbledon goalkeeper ran out of the penalty area to clear a foul ball, creating conditions for Enzo to score a golden goal to set the score 2-1. This is also Enzo’s first goal since joining Chelsea earlier this year.
Struggling to beat Wimbledon, Chelsea won the right to the third round of the League Cup and fortunately did not have to stop as soon as the team in the same city as Tottenham. Yesterday, Spurs unexpectedly lost to Fulham after a penalty shootout.
