Atlanta United mocks Lionel Messi after defeating Inter Miami 5-2 in Major League Soccer

Atlanta United poked fun at Lionel Messi after their 5-2 victory over Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS) on Saturday, September 16.

Leonardo Campana gave Inter Miami the lead in the 25th minute at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Tristan Muyumba then equalized in the 36th minute, before Kamal Miller’s own goal put Atlanta ahead in the 41st.

Books Lennon made it 3-1 with a goal right before halftime. Campana subsequently converted a penalty in the 53rd minute to complete his hat trick and draw the Herons within one goal. Giorgos Giakoumakis (76′) and Tyler Wolff (89′) sealed the victory for Atlanta United.

Inter Miami was without Lionel Messi, who had just returned from Argentina’s international service. On Friday, he shared an Instagram story in which he ordered a pizza with lots of tomatoes from a Miami restaurant.

Following their win over Inter Miami, Atlanta United took to Twitter to tweet a photo of a pizza with the tomatoes placed in the shape of a ‘L,’ denoting loss. The post was captioned:

“Here’s your pizza for the trip.”

While he did not play, this was Inter Miami’s first defeat since Lionel Messi’s arrival in the summer. With 28 points, they are presently 14th in the MLS’s Eastern Conference.
