Manchester United fans were enraged at Scott McTominay after a specific incident during their defeat to Bayern Munich.
In a thrilling Champions League Group A match at the Allianz Arena, the Bundesliga giants defeated the Red Devils 4-3.
Bayern now leads Group A after Galatasaray and Copenhagen drew 2-2 earlier in the day. Meanwhile, United is at the bottom of the group after only one game, increasing the pressure on Erik ten Hag.
There were numerous talking points from the evening’s action, including Andre Onana’s gaffe that gave Bayern the lead, Harry Kane’s disputed penalty, and Sergio Reguilon’s outstanding effort.
However, McTominay’s lack of effort to recover the ball after losing possession on the edge of Bayern’s penalty area stood out to supporters.
Despite only being on the field for 10 minutes, the Scotland international looked to the ground and slowly jogged back after taking a hard touch and surrendering the ball to Dayot Upamecano.
Fans reacted quickly to the midfielder’s lack of effort, with one tweeting, “Disgraceful and uncharacteristic for Scott — there’s something badly going wrong behind the scenes.”
“Unacceptable,” said another.
“So Mr passion and desire shows no passion and desire,” wrote a third.
“Even the ref runs faster than him,” said a fourth. All of our opponents’ goals have come from midfielders who did not track back. Specifically, Scott and Eriksen.”
“I thought I was the only one who saw it,” said a fifth. He would have taken advantage of the chance before the return of [Sofyan] Amrabat and Kobbie [Mainoo]. McTominay is done once these two and [Mason] Mount return to the team.”
