The only thing that has been able to stop Anthony Davis over the last decade has been his own body. The Lakers star is known as one of the best players in the NBA, but injuries have continuously limited his availability, and as a result, his stock among his peers has been rather low for someone of his caliber.
However, Lakers owner Jeannie Buss mentioned Davis’s performance this season and appeared to argue that he is the best player in the NBA.
“There’s an argument to be made that he [Davis] was the best player in the NBA when he was playing,” Buss said to The Athletic.
It’s a significant caveat, yet such an argument does carry some weight.
Last season, Los Angeles got off to a rocky start, prompting Buss to get death threats, she claims. However, after making some key trade deadline moves and getting healthy, the Lakers turned things around and made a long postseason run as the No. 7 seed before being routed by the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.
Davis averaged 25.9 points and 12.5 rebounds in 56 regular-season games last season, and Los Angeles relied on him just as much in the postseason. In addition, the eight-time All-Star averaged 22.6 points and 14.4 rebounds per playoff game.
Davis will get an opportunity to prove that he can be both healthy and dominant this season, though it is a long shot.
