Ronaldo Nazario selected his all-time best XI in football history, but omitted his namesake, five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, called ‘O Fenomeno,’ has two Ballon d’Ors to his name and 414 goals for club and country despite injuries.
He is often referred to as the “Original Ronaldo” by certain older football fans. The two Ronaldos only ever shared the field together once, in July 2005, for a charity match organized by Luis Figo.
They both had enormous success at Real Madrid, but ‘R9’ couldn’t find a spot for Portugal’s superstar on his team.
In a video from earlier this year, he selects Gianluigi Buffon in goal before naming Cafu and Roberto Carlos to a back four that also includes Franz Beckenbauer and Paolo Maldini.
In midfield, Ronaldo chose to combine Zico with the late Diego Maradona before assembling a lethal attacking quartet that included himself, seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, the immortal Pele, and football’s greatest entertainer, Ronaldinho.
The team is loaded with game-changing superstars, but after scoring over 800 goals in his career, Ronaldo was left out.
However, the 47-year-old has left out Ronaldo. In a 2022 interview with The Guardian, he praised eight members of a “special group” and singled himself out once more.
Ronaldo’s name, though, was not mentioned
“I think there is a very, very special group where you have Diego, Messi, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Pele, Van Basten, Ronaldinho,” Nazario added.
“I’d include myself.” Let the supporters have their say, and let them discuss it in the bars. However, you cannot rank them or compare generations.
“People call me the Original Ronaldo, but there were others – and they weren’t false.” I’m not the only one, and more will come along and outperform me in every way.”
