Gody Gakpo could be on the sidelines for a while after leaving Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a leg brace.
Liverpool were defeated 2-1 by Tottenham on Saturday night, with Gakpo scoring shortly before halftime to tie the game.
In a frenzied match, Jurgen Klopp’s team were reduced to nine men, and a Joel Matip own goal deep into added time clinched the win for Spurs. Luis Diaz’s first-half goal was ruled out for offside, and the PGMOL has since issued a statement clarifying that his attempt was mistakenly chalked off owing to a’significant human error’ during the VAR review.
Liverpool’s troubles were exacerbated by Gakpo’s injury, with the Dutch international exiting the stadium with his right knee braced.
Gakpo took the knock in a challenge from Destiny Udogie moments before scoring, limping away immediately after hitting the back of the net.
He will be scanned to determine the extent of the problem.
‘Cody is now limping down the corridor with a brace,’ Jurgen Klopp stated after the game.
‘To be honest, that’s my biggest concern right now. We lost two players [to red cards] and possibly a third [to injury].
‘He scored a goal, but that shot made him feel even worse. It was previously from the foul.’
Klopp was enraged by the decision to throw Diaz’s goal out, despite replays indicating his striker was kept onside by Spurs defender Cristian Romero.
The Liverpool manager was particularly critical of the red card judgments that saw Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off.
‘The first red card goes to Curtis, who steps on the ball and goes down. ‘It wasn’t a nasty tackle,’ Klopp added. ‘It appears differently in slow motion. He takes a full step on the ball and goes over it. That is unfortunate.
‘The first yellow was not a yellow for Jota. Then he gets a second, and defending with eight outfielders is difficult.’
