‘The biggest blow’: Klopp confirms major Cody Gakpo injury

Jurgen Klopp is concerned that Cody Gakpo will be sidelined for an extended period of time, as he expressed pride in his nine-man Liverpool squad after their long unbeaten run was terminated in spectacular and controversial circumstances.

Gakpo scored his second goal in a week to equalize Heung-Min Son’s opener shortly before halftime in Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the Dutchman had injured his knee moments earlier when he was caught by Tottenham left-back Destiny Udogie and was replaced by Diogo Jota at half-time.

Gakpo departed the stadium on crutches, wearing a protective brace on his right knee, and will have scans to determine the extent of his injuries.

“The biggest problem of the game was Cody Gakpo getting injured before he scored,” Klopp stated. He is now limping down the corridor while wearing a brace. That is my current problem.

“We lost two and possibly a third player, which was terrible. That is something we must certainly deal with.

“It’s possible that it’ll be horrible. I’m not sure. He scored a goal after that (the injury), but he felt it even more after that shot.”

Liverpool will already be without Curtis Jones for three Premier League games and Jota for one after both were ejected by referee Simon Hooper before Joel Matip scored an own goal in the final minute of added time to drop the Reds to their first defeat in 20 games.

But Klopp was pleased with his team’s overall effort and character, saying, “I told the boys directly after the game I am super, super proud.” We were really effective with a group of ten males. Everything was incredibly vital, and on top of that, we were really dangerous, yet we still created. That’s excellent work.

“However, the boys displayed an incredible mentality that was second to none; I’d never seen anything like it; it was top, top, top.”

“People might think we didn’t get anything out of the game because of this very, very unlucky – oh my God.” But not in my opinion. I learned a lot about my team, far more than if we had won in a horrible performance. In a way, it was a truly great performance. We didn’t get any points for it, but we’ll use it anyhow.”
