Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp described his team’s Premier League loss to Tottenham as having “the most unfair circumstances and crazy decisions” he’s ever seen.
To say the least, it was a contentious afternoon in North London. Luis Daz of Liverpool thought he had opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when he beat goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
The goal was called out after Spurs defender Cristian Romero played Diaz onside with his outstretched foot, but the assistant raised his flag and the goal was ruled out.
“He’s at least a metre onside,” Andy Gray remarked in his beiN Sports half-time commentary. “It’s not even close.”
Sky Sports stated at halftime that they had not been provided with an image of the offside lines for Diaz’s disallowed goal.
A disappointed Jurgen Klopp expressed his emotions about the offside judgment to Sky Sports after the game.
“It was an offside goal.” When you see it, that is not offside; they drew their lines incorrectly,” the German explained.
“The ball is between Mo’s legs; they drew the line incorrectly and failed to judge the moment when Mo passed the ball correctly.” It’s quite difficult to deal with.”
Klopp would also remark on the game’s conclusion, and while he acknowledged to being “proud” of his team’s effort, he was not pleased with the decision-making.
Of course, he mentioned referee Simon Hooper’s decision to send out Curtis Jones in the first half.
“I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions,” he stated.
“Curtis gets the first red card for stepping on the ball and going over.” That’s hardly a bad tackle. In slow motion, it appears differently. He takes a full step on the ball and goes over it. That is unfortunate.
“The first yellow was not a yellow for Diogo Jota. Then he gets a second, and defending with nine players is difficult. If you want to build something, you need players with attitude, and I saw them fight today. Tonight is quite special.”
Klopp also addressed Joel Matip’s unlucky own goal in the 95th minute. “Joel defended brilliantly today.” He put his foot out, and it went into the goal. Worse things can happen in life. “That’s how it is,” he explained.
Since Klopp’s interview with Sky Sports, PGMOL, the Premier League’s governing body, has recognized that their judgment to disallow Diaz’s goal was erroneous.
“PGMOL acknowledges a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool,” according to a statement.
“The on-field team of match officials disallowed Luis Diaz’s goal for offside.” This was a blatant and obvious factual error, and the goal should have been awarded through VAR intervention; nevertheless, the VAR did not interfere.
“PGMOL will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the error.” PGMOL will contact Liverpool immediately following the game to acknowledge the error.”
