MU fans couldn’t help but feel frustrated when the home team was denied an 11-meter kick in a 0-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in round 7 of the Premier League.
The situation took place in the 59th minute, when MU was leading 1-0 by Palace. Bruno Fernandes had the ball in front of the 16m50 box and then made a pass to the left for Marcus Rashford.
However, on the way to Rashford, the ball touched defender Joel Ward’s hand in the penalty area before crossing the line. MU players protested violently, asking the referee to give them 11 meters. However, the “king in black” still insisted on giving the Red Devils a left corner kick.
If the ball hadn’t touched Ward’s hands, Rashford probably would have been free to launch a cross-kick. Reviewing the slow-motion tape, the Palace defender had his hand close to his body, and the ball actually found its way to this player’s hand instead of intentionally playing the ball with his hand.
However, many MU fans still expressed dissatisfaction on social networks. One person commented: “Ward literally used his hands to stop the ball from reaching Rashford’s feet. Why isn’t that playing with his hands?”. A second person said: “This is so wrong… someone has to do something.”
Regardless, the verdict has been made and MU must accept the truth. They can only blame themselves for not taking advantage of opportunities to equalize. After 2 consecutive victories in all competitions, Erik ten Hag’s army has returned to the ground.
