Days after Damian Lillard was acquired by the Milwaukee Bucks through a deal, the Boston Celtics have responded.

The Portland Trail Blazers traded for Jrue Holiday, which the Celtics acquired, the franchise revealed on Sunday afternoon. The decision was initially reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

“Seeing Jrue wear a Celtics uniform excites us. Throughout his career, he has had a profoundly positive influence both on and off the court due to his fierce competitive nature as a player “Celtics president of basketball operations.” said Brad Stevens in a release announcing the deal. We’re ecstatic to have Jrue, Lauren, and the whole Holiday family here in Boston.

The Celtics lost two first-round draft picks, Malcolm Brogdon, and Robert Williams in the trade, which is a significant sacrifice. Holiday has a player option that is worth $37.365 million for the 2024–25 season, however, he is currently in the third year of a four-year contract. The Celtics intend to sign Holiday to a long-term contract, according to Wojnarowski.

In the Lillard deal earlier this week, Holiday was sent by the Bucks to the Blazers.

Holiday, 33, has played with the Bucks, Pelicans, 76ers, and Milwaukee Bucks when he was selected 17th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft. Milwaukee won a championship with Holiday in 2021. In 67 games for Milwaukee last season, Holiday averaged 19.3 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.1 rebounds, earning him a spot on his second career All-Star team. He has averaged 16.4 points, 6.5 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game in 906 career regular-season games. In 70 postseason contests, he has averaged 17.5 points, 6.9 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per contest. In his 906 career games, he has started 825 of them, and he has started all but eight of the games that he has played since 2017.

The Celtics picked Williams, 25, with the 17th overall choice in the 2018 NBA Draft. Well, he’s been an extremely productive player for Boston, but over his career, he hasn’t been able to stay on the court consistently.

The 30-year-old Brogdon was traded to Boston last summer along with Indiana. He averaged 14.9 points, 3.7 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game while playing off the bench for Boston in 67 games. Despite a postseason injury, he played in 19 games and finished with an average of 11.9 points, 2.9 assists, and 3.5 rebounds.

The Celtics have undergone significant change this offseason, starting with the sale of Marcus Smart to Memphis in order to acquire Kristaps Porzingis from Washington. Now, they have added Holiday to their roster. The Celtics also signed Jaylen Brown to a long-term agreement while sending Grant Williams to another team in a sign-and-trade.
