When Liverpool returns to Europa League action next week, they will be looking to rebound from their heartbreaking last-minute loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Reds welcome Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to Anfield on Thursday after seeing Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off and a Luis Diaz goal erroneously ruled off against Spurs. Jurgen Klopp is anticipated to name a much-changed lineup after heavily rotating his players between Premier League and cup competitions over the last two weeks.
With Cody Gakpo in question after being pulled off against Tottenham with a knee injury and being spotted in a brace after the final whistle, we look at the changes Klopp could make…
Captain Trent leads the new-look back four
Trent Alexander-Arnold, who returned from a hamstring injury as a substitute against Tottenham, is expected to start at right-back against Union. With further defensive changes on the way, he’s likely to skipper the Reds as well.
Ibrahima Konate replaces captain Virgil van Dijk at center-back, with Jarell Quansah likely to start alongside the Frenchman. Andy Robertson’s replacement will be Kostas Tsimikas.
Curtis maintains his position
With the October international break approaching, Jones will be unable to play in the Premier League as he serves a three-game suspension for his red card against Tottenham.
As a result, the midfielder should start versus Union, with the Europa League serving as his primary source of game time for the next month.
His absence from the Premier League will allow one of Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, or Ryan Gravenberch to make his debut against Brighton on Sunday. In the meanwhile, whomever is in line for such a promotion can be limited to Europa League substitute duty.
Darwin Nunez’s restoration
Darwin Nunez, who was due to be introduced before Jota’s red card against Tottenham, returns to the starting XI against Union in place of the injured Gakpo.
With the Portuguese serving a one-game suspension for his performance against Brighton, he could preserve his position against the Belgians. Meanwhile, Ben Doak will be hoping for another start at Anfield if Klopp decides to rest Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool’s possible starting XI (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Konate, Tsimikas; Elliott, Gravenberch, Jones; Doak, Nunez, Jota.
