Liverpool face FA fine due to VAR controversy despite Howard Webb apology

The FA may levy a £25,000 disciplinary charge on Liverpool following their 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Reds, who finished the game with nine men, were defeated in the 96th minute by Joel Matip’s own goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Meanwhile, Liverpool were furious after the PGMOL stated after the game that Luis Diaz had a goal erroneously disallowed for offside owing to VAR human error.

According to the ECHO, PGMOL CEO Howard Webb did call out to the club after the game to apologize for the disallowed goal. But it will be scant consolation to the Reds after the tight defeat, as it is far from the only event in the club capital that club executives are upset about.

However, Liverpool’s woes may not end with their ‘ill-discipline’ in the city. Following VAR intervention, Curtis Jones was controversially awarded a straight red card for a tackle on Yves Bissouma in the first half in North London, while Diogo Jota was dismissed for two bookable offences in rapid succession after the break.

Alexis MacAllister, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk, as well as assistant manager Peter Krawietz, were all cautioned. The FA penalizes clubs that receive more than five bookings in a game, and the Reds could face a punishment as a result.

Any team that receives six or more cards in a single match is typically fined £25,000. Liverpool will be punished according to the letter of the law.

It is now up to the FA to decide whether or not to take official action. However, given that the majority of the club’s cards were simply a result of how the game unfolded as a result of officiating errors, it remains to be seen whether they will actually hold Liverpool accountable or take into account the mistakes that backed the Reds into such a corner in the first place.

Liverpool have now had four players sent off this season, with manager Jurgen Klopp stating that despite their recent indiscipline, his club is not a filthy team.

“It’s important to me that people don’t think we’re a kicking team because we have so many red cards,” the German told reporters following his team’s loss to Spurs. “We don’t (kick players).”

“Alex’s first red card wasn’t a red card. The second is for a typical foul, in my opinion. The third is for that case (regarding Curtis), and the fourth I’m not sure how many games there are when you see 11 vs 9. It’s not something that happens very often, and we weren’t kicking Tottenham players. We attempted to play football.

“The first yellow is not a clear yellow, and the second is possibly a yellow.” Everything became more difficult as a result.”

Jones is poised to miss the rest of the Premier League season as he serves a three-match suspension, while Jota will miss the Reds’ trip to Brighton next weekend as he serves a one-match suspension.

Mac Allister is also facing a one-match suspension after receiving his third booking of the season against Spurs. Any player who receives five bookings in his team’s first 19 Premier League games faces an automatic one-match ban in the same tournament.
