‘We don’t like, we don’t want it’: Liverpool issue brutal response to PGMOL after costly VAR error

Jurgen Klopp’s team issued a statement after the PGMOL conceded that Luis Diaz’s goal at Tottenham was unjustly disallowed for offside after the VAR mistook the on-field decision to award the goal.

After Tottenham’s 2-1 win against Liverpool, the governing body stated that “a significant human error occurred” when Diaz’s score was ruled out, adding, “This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention.”

Indeed, it was initially thought that VAR Darren England had overlooked whether a Tottenham defender had played Diaz onside by drawing on-screen lines.

The PGMOL, on the other hand, argued that VAR wrongly assumed the on-field ruling was that a goal had been awarded, when it had been the contrary. As a result, although realizing Diaz was onside, England declared “check complete” and the goal was ruled out.

Liverpool said in a statement on Sunday that the explanation for the decision was “unacceptable” and that they planned to investigate a “range of options available” now that sporting integrity has been compromised.

“We fully accept the pressures that match officials work under, but these pressures are supposed to be alleviated, not exacerbated, by the existence and implementation of VAR,” the club stated.

“It is thus unsatisfactory that sufficient time was not provided to allow the correct decision to be made and that no subsequent intervention was made.”

“It is particularly unacceptable that such mistakes have already been classified as “serious human error.” Any and all conclusions should be determined solely by the review and in complete openness.

“This is critical for the dependability of future decision-making because it applies to all clubs, with learnings being used to improve processes so that this type of situation does not occur again.”

“In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given the clear need for escalation and resolution.”

The time between Diaz’s shot hitting the back of the net and play being restarted was less than 40 seconds. Furthermore, the time between showing TV viewers a VAR review and the check being finished was less than 10 seconds.

Heung-Min Son scored the game’s first goal just two minutes after the incident.
