Mason Mount speaks out on ‘unwanted’ record in Crystal Palace defeat

Mason Mount was candid after Manchester United were defeated 1-0 at home by Crystal Palace.

Crystal Palace claimed all three points thanks to Joachim Andersen’s powerful first-half strike, sending United to back-to-back league defeats at home.

Indeed, the last time United lost two consecutive Premier League home games was in October and November 2021, against Liverpool and Manchester City, the final two home league games of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.

Furthermore, the defeat marks United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season, with Erik ten Hag’s side losing four of their first seven games.

Indeed, it is the first time United has lost four of its first seven games since the 1989-90 season, and Mount spoke about the club’s “difficult” start after the game.

“We want to win these games, and we know we need to win these games,” England international Ashley Young told the Mirror. “It’s been a challenging start. When you’re down 1-0, it’s usually difficult to get back into the game. We had a few opportunities, but they weren’t enough.

“We know we need to go back and look at where we can improve.” We must improve if we want to win games.

“We want to compete until the bitter end in every competition we enter.” It’s a difficult one to accept. There are some things we should look into, but it’s a frustrating path to travel.”

Mount said of his missed chance to tie the game in the second half, “I just tried to glance it and it hit my shoulder.” If I get that, we’re back in the game and looking for the winner. It’s all about the margins, and things aren’t going our way right now.

“You don’t want to lose games, especially at home in front of your home crowd.” We want to win games and perform for them. We need to take a break and look at certain areas that weren’t working today.”

Meanwhile, manager Ten Hag acknowledged he understood the frustrations of the United fans, who booed after the final whistle.

“I understand fans were expecting a win, and we didn’t win, and we lost,” Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said.

“Of course, it’s a concern; we need to be more consistent; this is not Manchester United’s demand.” The expectation is that we win a string of games and enter a series. We must do better than we are doing today.

“I can give you reasons but you will explain it as an excuse and there are no excuses, we have to win.”
