Jurgen Klopp and his team were demoralized by Liverpool’s highly contentious, last-gasp defeat to Tottenham.
In addition to the current VAR controversy, the game raised many new availability worries for the Reds ahead of a return to Europa League action against in-form Union Saint-Gilloise and a challenging trip to Brighton in the Premier League before the next international break.
Here’s all you need to know about the latest Liverpool injury and suspension news.
CODY GAKPO
The Dutch forward departed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a leg brace after being replaced at halftime due to an injury.
Jurgen Klopp appeared concerned about Gakpo’s fitness after the game.
“[It was] the biggest problem of the game, to be honest… before Cody Gakpo scored, we got a free-kick and he got injured, and he is now limping down the corridor with a brace,” the manager remarked.
“To be honest, that’s my biggest concern right now. We lost two players [to red cards] and possibly a third – it was terrible. So, obviously, that is something we must deal with.”
Liverpool are currently awaiting the results of a scan to determine the extent of the damage, with speculation circulating that the 24-year-old might be out for six weeks.
THIAGO ALCANTARA
Liverpool’s experienced playmaker has not played a minute of Premier League action in 2023/24 and last began in February.
Thiago’s return date has not been set, with the midfielder reportedly still trying to recover from a hip issue he has had for several months.
STEFAN BAJCETIC
Bajcetic, 18, made his Europa League debut against LASK after recovering from an adductor injury that terminated his 2022/23 season in March.
Following that, he came off the bench against Leicester in the Carabao Cup. However, following that performance, Klopp conceded that the midfielder had suffered a “setback.”
“Stefan had a minor setback,” he explained. The issue with Stefan is that I’m sure everyone wants to see him play more – I do – but we have to tread carefully. And now it’s a tiny, tiny, tiny calf problem. When you’re six months out, that’s how it goes.
“We do everything we can to get him up to speed without pushing him.” We devise a very precise strategy for him, but the fact that he received another one is disappointing not only for him, but also for us. So we’ll have to take him out for a while. He can work on almost anything else except playing. That’s all I’d say.”
CURTIS JONES
Jones’ VAR-reviewed sending off in the extremely controversial defeat to Spurs on Saturday means the midfielder will serve a three-match ban as is the normal punishment for ‘severe foul behaviour’.
Liverpool can appeal the judgment, but if the appeal is deemed frivolous, it will be added to Jones’ ban.
Jones will currently miss Liverpool’s games against Brighton (a), Everton (h), and Nottingham Forest (h) this month.
DIOGO JOTA
Jota collected two yellow cards in two minutes, reducing Liverpool to nine men in the second half against Tottenham – albeit it’s debatable if the Portuguese forward really made touch with Destiny Udogie for the first booking.
Nonetheless, Liverpool are unable to appeal Jota’s dismissal because it was the result of two bookings rather than a straight red, and the Reds’ number 20 Wolves will now miss one match as a result – the trip to Brighton on Sunday, 8 October.
He will, at the very least, be available for the Merseyside Derby, Liverpool’s second match after the international break in October.
