Man City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his sympathies to Liverpool after a goal was incorrectly disallowed for offside in the Reds’ loss to Tottenham on Saturday.
In a game packed with questionable officiating decisions, Luis Diaz felt he had opened the scoring in the first half only to have it disallowed by the on-field officials. The VAR did not intervene because it believed a goal had been awarded, and the PGMOL later admitted a’significant human error’ had occurred.
Following an official request to PGMOL, Liverpool has made an incendiary statement demanding transparency and change, as well as obtained the match officials’ audio from their loss to Tottenham.
However, as the impact from Saturday’s game continues, Guardiola has chimed in on the subject after being asked about VAR ahead of Man City’s Champions League match against RB Leipzig.
“It changed the job of the referees because now they don’t make the decisions, it goes to the VAR,” he stated to reporters. “I understand Liverpool’s feelings, but the referees’ bosses will make the decision.”
“No (I don’t know how to improve it).” I’m not a professional at it, so I’ll do my best. I’m not involved, and I’m not interested.
“We have to rely on the people who work there.” Everyone knows they made a mistake, and Liverpool suffered as a result. This is why winning these games is so essential.
“They’ll need to devise a system in which the main roles are the players and the game itself.” Not just in our country, but in all countries. The referees and VARs play the most important roles. And the award goes to… they must take a step back. It’s all about the players.
“In some games, be more humble and let the players do their jobs, and they will be better.” They will improve.”
