One of the most exquisite first-generation Ford Mustang models we’ve seen in a long time has to be this one. This Fastback model is also early, most likely from 1965. One of the top stars in the NBA and a professional basketball player for the Boston Celtics, Jayson Tatum, is the owner of the car.
Just prior to the 1965 manufacturing year, Ford released the “original” Mustang, sparking a famous journey that would eventually lead to the creation of the Mach-E, an EV using the Mustang name. Currently in its sixth generation, the seventh generation of the Mustang is scheduled to debut early in 2019.
Whenever we consider vintage Mustangs, though, our thoughts invariably return to the original. A 1967–1969 Mustang is arguably the most well-known American classic still in existence. Some 1970MY cars were also cool, but things took a turn for the worse starting with the 1971 model year. The Mustang wouldn’t be cool again until the late fifth-generation variants, such as the GT500 and Boss 302, arrived after 2010.
Nevertheless, there aren’t many restored 1965–1966 Mustangs available, particularly in Fastback configuration, which is the more sought-after body style.
To be fair, Jayson Tatum doesn’t seem to have 100% stock in his vintage Mustang. It has aftermarket wheels, a bespoke suspension that makes it appear to sit closer to the road, and the NBA player’s initials are placed between two special speakers.
It doesn’t really matter how Tatum obtained this car—he either bought it or received it as a gift when he turned 23 last year. Which is more important than its appearance and driving performance. It’s also good to see a young, talented athlete honor the auto industry by traveling in a vintage vehicle rather than one from the current decade.
Aside from cars, the Boston Celtics player is preparing for the 2022 NBA Finals, when he will meet the Golden State Warriors. Game 1 is scheduled for this Friday, June 1, in San Francisco.
Tatum has averaged 27 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game thus far in the playoffs this year. He’s had perhaps his greatest season to far, so let’s hope he puts on a strong performance against Steph Curry and the Dubs.
