The France international cheerfully waved to fans waiting to meet PSG at their Quayside hotel.

Mbappe didn’t stop to sign autographs, but PSG coach Luis Enrique did after their personalised team bus arrived in town.

The possibility of a first home Champions League match since 2003 has Newcastle buzzing, with the coming of the French champions and their great players promising an electrifying atmosphere at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Eddie Howe’s side began their Group F campaign with a goalless draw away to AC Milan a fortnight ago.

Joelinton is a serious doubt for the PSG match after limping out of the Burnley victory due to a hamstring injury. Botman is out with a knee injury and will not return until after the internationals.

Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock will miss the game yet again as they recuperate from foot and ankle problems, respectively.

This is Newcastle’s first meeting with PSG, although they have a bad record against French opponents, having won only three of 13 previous matches in all competitions, losing six and drawing four.

The fact that [SG have lost five of their last seven Champions League games against English opponents, with the two Manchester clubs having the best of them in recent years, is a better sign.
