Liverpool finished the summer transfer window with a gleaming new midfield but no new defenders. It is obvious that some new blood is needed in the center-back position. Captain Virgil van Dijk is 32 years old, and his teammates Ibrahima Konaté and Jol Matip compete for the last seat on the injured table like it is a game of musical chairs.
While Liverpool has not traditionally done much business in the winter, they have been known to make exceptions if the need is great enough or the player is talented enough. Van Dijk, with whom the Reds finally agreed to terms in January 2018, is a prime illustration of this.
The Brazilian player Lucas Beraldo is thought to be a candidate Klopp and company are looking into right now to fill the need in defense. Beraldo now plays for Sao Paulo in his native Brazil. However, the Brazilian press reports that he is attracting interest from English and European teams.
Aside from the Reds, Newcastle United and Wolves are thought to be in the running, while Porto, Benfica, and Monaco are all being mentioned. Last season, the 19-year-old center-back earned his first team debut and also represents Brazil at the U20 level.
If he does arrive in Merseyside, he will not be competing for a slot alongside van Dijk. He would be at least fourth in the pecking order until he could prove himself to Klopp.
Scouting reports may have indicated that he would be a good fit for the team and possibly a long-term project. It is possible, but it is more likely that they are only rumors that will fade away soon.
