The summer transfer window did not end every Liverpool transfer saga. One in particular may be available for Jürgen Klopp and his recruitment team to revisit in the January transfer window.
André, a Fluminense midfielder, was on Liverpool’s radar for much of the summer as a potential alternative in the holding midfield position. However, his team was hesitant to let him go, and the Reds had to wait until January to pursue the transaction further.
One of the main reasons Fluminense was hesitant to let André depart was that the club was playing in the Copa Libertadores, South America’s equivalent of the Champions League. The Brazilian team is hoping to win the trophy.
André was a key player and cog in Fluminense’s midfield machine, and he was considered an indispensable element of the squad, hence he was not for sale despite Liverpool’s interest.
And Fluminense’s strong attitude has been justified in the month or so afterwards, with the Brazilian side having already reached the final of the contests, partly because to André himself, who has been pivotal in the Brazilian side’s outstanding campaign.
Liverpool could undoubtedly use another player of his caliber, capable of playing in a more deep and defensive role, with a voracious desire for the ball and a terrific work ethic to go along with his exceptional technique.
André excels in that position, and it’s clear he’s a player who could be of tremendous service to Liverpool, especially in the kind of dynamic midfield set-up that Klopp has constructed this season.
André has been sending one transfer reminder after another of his talent to the club’s scouts week after week, and that continued in the second leg of the semi-final against Internacional.
André completed the most passes on the field (95), won three of four duels, including two of his two challenges, and made five recoveries in that game. Playing the ideal role of a midfield anchor, he demonstrated exactly what Liverpool is still lacking in the midfield, and why Klopp has been forced to deploy Alexis Mac Allister in that role, despite the fact that he is better in a more forward position.
January is almost approaching, and if Fluminense wins the title, the chances of André leaving for greener pastures would undoubtedly grow.
Everyone likes to leave their clubs on a positive note, and André now has that chance before making a significant move to Europe in January, where Anfield appears to be a perfect destination.
