Liverpool player ratings: TWO poor, ONE brilliant Mo Salah couldn’t get full points at Brighton

Mohamed Salah scored twice to help Liverpool draw 2-2 at Brighton.

After a mix-up between Virgil van Dijk, Alexis MacAllister, and Alisson allowed Simon Adingra to score in the first half, the Reds had to come back. Lewis Dunk equalized late in the second half after Ryan Gravenberch had earlier struck the crossbar, before Joao Pedro squandered a golden opportunity to win it.

Ian Doyle’s LFC player ratings are as follows:

7 Alisson Becker

Poor placement allowed Adingra to snare a hilariously easy opener, but a brilliant save in the second half denied the same man.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 7

He won his duel with Mitoma and proceeded to influence affairs with his passing after sliding into central midfield in the second half. Subbed.

6 Joel Matip

Early on, there were a couple of strong defensive blocks, and Liverpool attempted to attack from deep. Subbed and solid.

Van Dijk 6

Partly to blame for the opening goal with a sloppy pass, and didn’t look happy with much before the interval, though he improved after that.

Robertson 6

Due to the bustling Adingra down the Brighton right, there were just a few attacking forays. He started to find space in the second half, but he was pushed back in the fourth quarter.

5 Alexis MacAllister

Just doesn’t appear at ease in the number six role, and he’s far too casual when giving the ball away to Brighton’s opener. Nipped in to start the equalizer, though, and improved in the second half.

5 Harvey Elliott

A lot of effort, but he didn’t use the ball efficiently on the few chances he had before coming alive before the interval. Subbed.

Szoboszlai 6

Switched to the left of the midfield three and saw little possession before assisting on the equalizer and then winning the penalty. When shifted to the right after the interval, it becomes more lively. Booked.

7 Mohamed Salah

Too frequently peripheral and handed too many tricky passes, but he equalised with flair and then confidently tucked away a penalty. However, the second half was more sporadic.

6 Darwin Nunez

He was barely involved before his pass set up Salah’s equalizer. There was little offensive threat, but the team worked hard to press the Brighton back line.

6 Luis Diaz

I liked his tussle with Veltman and the one Liverpool player who showed any real desire in the first quarter. As the game went, I faded a little and missed the opening.

Elliott 46 (Ryan Gravenberch) 6

Missed a sitter when he struck the crossbar from distance, but he added a lot of energy to Liverpool’s midfield play.

Ibrahima Konate (in place of Matip 73) 5

Added some physicality to the rearguard attempt, but a sloppy foul allowed Brighton to equalize.

Joe Gomez (replacing Alexander-Arnold 80)

Inconsistent performance. Booked.
