Jamie Carragher slammed Joe Gomez after the defender came off the bench late in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Brighton on Sunday.
Carragher was commenting on Super Sunday (Sky Sports; 8/10; 15:45) after receiving a yellow card for a cynical foul on Kaoru Mitoma.
Joe Gomez entered the game with 10 minutes remaining at Amex Stadium. Just before that, Brighton’s Lewis Dunk tied the game at 2-2. And Jurgen Klopp chose the England international to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, probably to beef up the visitors’ defense.
However, it appears that Gomez’s cameo did not impress Jamie Carragher. The former Charlton Athletic player was chastised by the commentator after receiving a yellow card for dragging down Mitoma after the Brighton star beat him on the wing.
Joe Gomez does not impress Jamie Carragher
“Mitoma is brilliant once more.” But you bring in Joe Gomez because you believe he will be a better defensive player than Trent Alexander-Arnold. “He’s been really bad in one on one defending since he came on,” he told Sky Sports.
The Liverpool defender has always had a difficult challenge
As the full-time whistle approached, the game became increasingly frantic. There was a time when Brighton appeared to be on the verge of scoring a fifth goal. Joao Pedro missed a golden chance in the center of the goal.
But Liverpool had the upper hand. During stoppage time, it appeared like the Reds were far more likely to win.
With that in mind, it was undoubtedly difficult for Gomez to enter the game. We must also remember that he was up against Mitoma, one of the most entertaining wingers in the Premier League.
He needed to get into the game as soon as possible. And he went on to make an amazing challenge well inside Brighton’s half, which was especially daring given his yellow card.
So, while it may not have been the ideal cameo, Jurgen Klopp may feel satisfied that he completed the task at hand.
