After Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with the Seagulls, Alexis MacAllister reconnected with Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Mac Allister, who spent four years at Brighton between 2019 and 2023, joined Liverpool in a £35 million transfer in June.
On Sunday, the 24-year-old faced his previous club for the first time in his career, as Liverpool lost a late equalizer on the South Coast despite Mohamed Salah’s first-half brace.
Following the game, Mac Allister was seen parading around the Amex, paying his respects to Brighton fans for the first time since his summer move to Anfield.
De Zerbi, who could be seen enjoying a warm embrace with his former midfielder before instructing the Brighton fans to demonstrate their appreciation, was also present.
“Brighton, more than any club, know Mac Allister’s preferred position isn’t as a holding midfielder and, unsurprisingly, played on that accordingly,” said the ECHO’s lead Liverpool writer Ian Doyle in his analysis.
“It worked out. Trent Alexander-Arnold had already been forced to bring down Kaoru Mitoma the first time Trent Alexander-Arnold pressed forward when, after 20 minutes, he was far too casual accepting a pass from Virgil van Dijk in midfield and lost possession, from which Simon Adingra scored in almost comical fashion.
“Mac Allister, spooked and on the back foot, had no choice but to hack down Joao Pedro on the edge of the area as Liverpool teetered on the brink of collapse.”
“True, it was his positioning that allowed him to intercept Lewis Dunk’s pass into midfield and start the move that resulted in the Reds’ equalizer.” And his entire game improved significantly in the second half, especially when he began moving into more forward areas as Liverpool chased a late winner.”
