Wayne Rooney, the all-time leading goalscorer for Manchester United, believes that following a disastrous start to the season, the team’s current group of players must begin accepting accountability for their performances.
Last season, the Red Devils finished third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup to end a trophy hiatus. However, thus far this season, they have been unable to replicate those achievements.
United have been defeated in eight of their fifteen matches across all competitions. This week, they have been defeated 3-0 at Old Trafford by Manchester City and Newcastle.
Gary Neville suggested that manager Erik ten Hag might be fired shortly after the team’s most recent loss on Wednesday. However, Wayne Rooney, who recently returned to England to assume leadership of Birmingham City, believes that the players must accept responsibility for the team’s predicament and do more to save their season.
“That’s the job,” Rooney responded in response to a question regarding the pressure Ten Hag is under.
Wayne Rooney has urged members of the Manchester United squad to “accept responsibility” for their shortcomings.
Rooney is convinced that the team’s members “can do much more” to salvage the season.
Eight of his squad’s fifteen games this season have been lost, heightening the pressure on Erik ten Hag.
Everyone accepts the fact that such is a component of the occupation. I am aware that I am entering Birmingham City under considerable duress. Ten Hag certainly is aware of this at Manchester United.
“Although things are not going as planned or as desired, the players must accept responsibility.” Certain athletes are not performing to the level that I am aware they are capable of.
“Of course, the manager is in charge from beginning to end; that is an inherent aspect of the managerial role.” After the last few weeks, you’ll receive criticism, but players are capable of much more.’
Rooney’s remarks coincide with reports that animosity is percolating in the United locker room, with some players believing Ten Hag continues to guard favorites within the squad.
In addition, Paul Merson is of the opinion that Ten Hag has “lost the players” following the team’s lopsided exit from the Carabao Cup against Newcastle.
Reportedly, Ten Hag has attempted to quell dressing room discord through one-on-one meetings with his players; however, he must begin producing better results on the field in order to remain in the Old Trafford dugout.
United return to action on Saturday when they travel to Fulham. In what promises to be a pivotal week of the season, they will then face FC Copenhagen in the Champions League and entertain Luton the following weekend.
