After a terrible start to the season, Wayne Rooney, the all-time greatest goalscorer for Manchester United, feels that the team’s current roster needs to start accepting accountability for their performances.
Although they won the Carabao Cup last season and finished third in the Premier League, the Red Devils have not replicated similar accomplishments thus far this year.
United have lost 8 of their 15 games throughout all competitions. This week, at Old Trafford, the team has lost three straight games to Manchester City and Newcastle.
After the team’s most recent loss on Wednesday, manager Erik ten Hag is under increasing pressure, and Gary Neville even suggested that he might be fired shortly after.
However, Rooney—who recently returned to England to take charge of Birmingham City—believes that the players need to shoulder some of the responsibility and step up to save the season.
Man United players have been urged by Wayne Rooney to “take responsibility” for their performances.
“That’s part of the job, we all know that when we take jobs. I know coming here [Birmingham City] there is a lot of pressure. I’m sure Ten Hag knows that at Man United.
It’s not going as well as they’d like or would have hoped but the players need to take responsibility. I know some of the players, they’re not performing at the levels which I know they have.
Of course, ultimately it starts and ends with the manager, that’s part of being a manager. You’ll get the critics after the last few weeks but players can do a lot more.”
Rooney’s comment coincide with rumors that tensions are high in the United locker room because some players believe Ten Hag has favorites in the team that he is still guarding.
In addition, Paul Merson feels that Ten Hag has “lost the players” after witnessing the team collapse to a lopsided loss against Newcastle and lose the Carabao Cup.
Ten Hag supposedly spoke one-on-one with his players to try to ease tensions in the locker room, but he needs to start producing results on the field in order to continue in the Old Trafford dugout.
In what looks to be a crucial week for them this season, United will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Fulham. The following weekend, they will host Luton then play FC Copenhagen in the Champions League.
