It appears that Pep Guardiola has discovered another gem in winger Jeremy Doku, who led Manchester City to a 6-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.
Doku, who was acquired in the offseason from Rennes for $68 million, has been forced to wait for opportunities to play on a City squad loaded with stars.
However, in the match against Bournemouth at Etihad Stadium, he demonstrated his prowess by generating four goals and scoring one, thereby temporarily elevating the defending champions to the top of the standings.
Doku scored the opening goal for City in the 30th minute, and three minutes later, he assisted Bernardo Silva in doubling the advantage.
He believed he had scored his second in the 37th minute, but replays revealed the goal-bound shot was deflected off of Manuel Akanji and past Andrei Radu, the goalkeeper for Bournemouth, to make the score 3-0.
Doku assisted Phil Foden, a substitute for City, in converting City’s fourth goal in the 64th minute and also set up Silva for his second of the match in the 83rd.
In the 74th minute, Bournemouth substitute Luis Sinisterra provided consolation for the visitors between those two goals.
In the 88th minute, Nathan Ake completed the rout with a header.
City increased its 100% record at home in all competitions this season with the victory and surpassed Tottenham and Arsenal atop the league standings.
Saturday evening, Arsenal hosted Newcastle, needing a decisive victory to surpass City. On Monday, Tottenham, which began the day in first place in the standings, faces Chelsea.
