To once again contend for the Premier League championship, Liverpool, according to Jamie Carragher, require a holding midfielder and a premier defender, and Darwin Nunez must be more clinical.
Luis Diaz’s emotional late equalizer for Liverpool cancelled out Tahith Chong’s opener for Luton, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate on a thrilling Super Sunday.
Due to a combination of solid defense and missed opportunities, the Reds had difficulty scoring against the Hatters and have now gone four away games without a victory against newly-promoted opponents.
Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports following the match, identified Liverpool’s improvement areas and stated that the club is not yet prepared to win another Premier League trophy.
“Liverpool is still not as proficient at defending against counterattacks as Manchester City,” the former defender said.
“Liverpool are a team that dominates possession and has a great deal of the ball, but their off-the-ball performance is not quite as good as Man City’s, resulting in more turnovers and ball loss.”
“Opponents appear to be finding openings considerably more frequently in order to assault Liverpool and get behind the defense. Luton lacked the quality necessary to truly penalize them, with the exception of the goal we observed.
“Liverpool have made strides in the midfield since our last observation, but they still lack a premier holding midfielder.”
“Alexis MacAllister does not rank among the best holding midfielders. Although he demonstrates proficiency in receiving the ball, he encounters significant challenges on defense and possesses a modest amount of speed for that position.
“With regard to the back four, Liverpool could benefit from an exceptional defender who is versatile enough to play in multiple positions, rather than a player specialized in a single position.
“On Sunday, they decided to start Joe Gomez at left back because they believed he would provide more defensive strength. I believe Liverpool could benefit from a right-back occupying that position on the opposing side, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to potentially transition into the midfield.
Liverpool are not prepared for a league championship. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters are currently cognizant of this.
“They are determined to return to the top four.” “To challenge once more, I believe they require a holding midfielder and a defender of the highest caliber.”
Prior to the journey to Kenilworth Road, Jurgen Klopp described Nunez’s improvement this season to Sky Sports as “exciting.” However, despite that, the forward failed to score on any of his nine attempts.
An instance during the second half occurred where he missed the target by yards, adding fuel to the fire of his critics.
Although Nunez displayed some positive attributes as the No. 9 for Liverpool, Carragher has urged him to maintain a more clinical demeanor at times and prevent himself from becoming an online meme.
He told Sky Sports, “There is so much to admire about Darwin Nunez.”
“He has had an outstanding season thus far; however, there are times [such as his miss in the second half] when those who are not perhaps his biggest fans may refer to it.
“He must alter those circumstances in that manner.” There was a moment in the first half when he could have executed a different type of finish; he must incorporate that into his gameplan; instead of constantly sending his foot through it, be a little more circumspect.
“He is hazardous, a nuisance, and never will he exhibit the utmost clinicality. Currently, he has been a member of our organization for nearly eighteen months.
“However, there is no doubt that he has developed significantly this season; he is now Liverpool’s No 9.
“However, he needs to cease posting parodies on social media and observing the enormous opportunities that he fails to seize. “He must exhibit greater clinicality when confronted with such circumstances.”
Additionally, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp downplayed the error, stating to Sky Sports, “It’s just one of those days, which is perfectly normal.
“Regardless of the fact that it was offside once or twice, neither of those goals would have been significant. Mo (Salah) squares the one ball with a header; I believe he is already capable of doing so.
“The crossbar goal in the first half is exceptionally well-executed; it was simply unlucky.” We also experienced additional moments.
“When he accounts for over 50% [of Liverpool’s shots], it speaks volumes about his involvement in the game. However, something wasn’t entirely satisfactory given the caliber of our squad; we needed to be more versatile.”
“Everything is perfect. Although it may not be our ideal outcome, at this point in our lives we are all mature enough to accept what is.
