The victory over Fulham on Saturday brought Erik ten Hag’s record as Manchester United manager to 50 victories.
In the Dutchman’s 79th game in charge of United, Bruno Fernandes scored in stoppage time to end a close match with limited opportunities.
Ten Hag tied a record that, astonishingly, had stood for 118 years, making this the joint fastest time ever for a manager to accumulate 50 wins for the Reds.
Ernest Mangnall reached a significant milestone in 1905 when United defeated Blackpool 1-0 at Bloomfield Road. Mangnall led the team to its first major trophy, the First Division title in 1908. He also registered 50 wins in his first 79 games.
Teams only participated in the league and the FA Cup back then, but Ten Hag’s victories have come from five different competitions.
Thirty victories in the Premier League have been attained by United, which finished third in his first season. The former Ajax manager has also won four FA Cups and seven League Cups, winning the former at Wembley in February and qualifying for the latter’s final in June.
With Erik in command, we have won nine of our fifteen European matches; eight of those came in the Europa League the previous year and one in the Champions League this one.
Before Erik, Jose Mourinho was the closest to equal Mangnall; it took the Portuguese manager 81 games to reach 50, and that came in the 2017–18 Champions League triumph over Benfica.
The statistics of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (95), Sir Matt Busby (96), and Ron Atkinson (97) are strikingly similar, but it was not until his 105th match—a 3-0 victory against Millwall in 1989—that Sir Alex Ferguson reached the half century.
“We have to win every game,” Ten Hag responded when questioned about the record. “With this win, it’s OK. We take it with us [for] 24 hours. Then we focus on the next game and it is an important game in Copenhagen.”
