Manchester United defeated Fulham by a score of 1-0 over the weekend, bouncing back from back-to-back 3-0 losses.
A late equalizer by Bruno Fernandes in stoppage time was sufficient to give the Red Devils a crucial victory.
Recent defeats suffered by United both occurred at Old Trafford, adding to the mounting strain on manager Erik ten Hag following a shaky start to the season.
Notwithstanding their triumph over Fulham, the Red Devils maintain their eighth position in the Premier League standings with Luton Town and Everton as impending opponents.
Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison stated on The Weekend Wrap on Optus Sport that United needed to win at Fulham in order to turn around their season and for Ten Hag to maintain his job security.
“What I would say from Man United’s view, and I did say before the game watching it, it’s all about the win,” he commented.
“They had to secure the victory, considering the week they’ve had, the attention that has been on them, their subpar performance, and the fact that Ten Hag is a man under duress. I am hesitant to believe he will endure if they fail to defeat Luton next week and fail to win that game.
“So that there for Man United was a must-win, so you have to credit Man United for digging in.”
Although the Red Devils did secure a victory on the fringes, victories by a razor-thin margin have become an alarming trend for the squad thus far in the season.
Seven of Ten Hag’s squad’s most recent Premier League victories have been decided by a single goal, as they earn all three points with a flawless performance.
Hutchison further stated that United still has a long way to go and that such shaky performances underscore the reason why other teams are questioning even their victories.
“When he (Ten Hag) says trust the process, you need to look a little bit deeper,” Hutchison commented.
“When we criticize Manchester United, it’s not just about them; it’s when you compare them to Manchester City in the pre-match period that we begin to notice deficiencies in their structure, strategy, overloads, and play patterns.”
“In the moment, even though they’re winning games, and credit to them for winning games, there’s still not many patterns of play you can cling on to and say this team is playing well.”
