Pep Guardiola stated that Erling Haaland is “significantly better” since sustaining an ankle injury the previous weekend.
Haaland suffered the knock during the first half of Saturday’s 6-1 victory over Bournemouth for Manchester City. Guardiola stated after the match that he was uncertain whether Haaland would be available to face Young Boys on Tuesday.
However, the City manager provided a positive update prior to the Champions League match. “We consult with the physicians and observe.” He stated yesterday that he feels considerably better. Guardiola further stated that he is uncertain whether Haaland will train on Monday prior to the match, as the media was granted access to the live session at 3pm.
City must earn a minimum of two points from the final three Champions League matches in order to advance to the knockout stages. Therefore, Tuesday’s match may not be of critical importance to Guardiola, who may not be inclined to rush Haaland back. On Sunday, the European champions will also face Chelsea in the final match prior to the international break in November.
However, Guardiola insisted that Haaland will play on Tuesday if he is pain-free, after four days of rest prior to this weekend’s trip to Stamford Bridge.
“I will pay attention to the doctor tomorrow.” If he affirms that he is pain-free, I will contemplate allowing him to play. There are numerous days to recuperate from Tuesday to Sunday. “Neither Wednesday nor Thursday has arrived,” he declared.
Guardiola further stated, “Julian [Alvarez] will undoubtedly play in Erling’s absence.” “He can play in either position, although I believe he is more at ease operating from surprise positions behind the striker. I am extremely delighted.”
