After failing a late fitness test, Rashford missed United’s 1-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday due to injury. This came after a week in which manager Erik ten Hag chastised the 26-year-old for celebrating his birthday last Monday night until the wee hours of the morning when he had training.
Some fans are debating if Ten Hag should fire him due to his terrible form and body language.
But on Monday, Rashford responded sharply and vehemently to a video posted by well-known fan channel The United Stand inquiring as to whether or not his future was “in doubt.”
In response, Rashford said on X, “Please STOP spreading malicious rumours.”
With 1.77 million members, The United Stand posted a video on YouTube with the following description: “Given Rashford’s injury against Fulham and his recent sub par performances, the question arises: should he be still be a regular starter for Manchester United?”
Rashford was rewarded with a lucrative new five-year contract in the summer after scoring 30 goals for United the previous season.
Although he made an impression for England during their 3-1 triumph over Italy last month, which guaranteed their spot in the summer of 2024 at Euro, he hasn’t looked like the same performer for United at home this season.
Ten Hag called Rashford’s choice to attend a nightclub in Manchester till the wee hours of the morning following the 3-0 derby loss to Manchester City “unacceptable” and stated that the youngster had shown regret for his actions. Later that morning, Rashford arrived on time for training.
Ten Hag, meanwhile, gave his team a rallying cry on Sunday night during his attendance at a Football Writers’ Association awards ceremony in Manchester.
Ten Hag said to the Northern FWA after getting an award for winning the Carabao Cup the previous season: “We are in the project and when you are in a project, you know, ups and downs and this moment we are in a down, but I know and this, football is like life.
It’s not only going always the way up, it’s in the bad moments about how you stick together and how you continue the project, how you stick to the rules and the principles you have because, you know, and that is the way you finally achieve the success. And so I’m sure we are in the right direction.
In football it’s all about winning trophies, it is very difficult after what Sir Alex [Ferguson] did with Manchester United to do well with Manchester United. That is a challenge I would not get out of the way. I wanted to do the job and last year was fantastic, difficult start, but finally it became a great season.
We are still really pleased with it [the Carabao Cup], but it’s not enough with Manchester United as we have high targets and we have to go and get there.”
