Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool’s 1-1 stalemate at Luton demonstrated that his former club still lacks two signings necessary to contend for the Premier League championship this year.
Liverpool salvaged a point at the newly promoted opponent on the late equalizer of Luis Diaz, after Jurgen Klopp’s squad fell behind to a second-half goal from substitute Tahith Chong.
Carragher remarked that Reds forward Darwin Nunez should be more “clinical” after condemning him to a missed golden opportunity in a scoreless contest.
In order to contend with Manchester City for the championship this season, Liverpool still lack a “holding midfielder” and a “top-tier defender,” according to Carragher.
As part of their midfield reshuffle this summer, the Reds sold Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. While the acquisition of Dominic Szoboszlai has been a positive development, Alexis Mac Allister has been compelled to play holding midfield.
Carragher, evaluating the reason Liverpool has yet to secure the league title, stated on Sky Sports: “Liverpool continue to fall short in thwarting counter-attacks to the same extent that Manchester City do. Liverpool are a team that dominates possession and has a great deal of the ball, but their off-the-ball performance is not quite as strong as Man City’s, resulting in more turnovers and ball loss.
“Opponents appear to be finding openings considerably more frequently in order to assault Liverpool and get behind the defense. Luton lacked the quality necessary to truly penalize them, with the exception of the goal we observed.
“Liverpool have made strides in the midfield since our last observation, but they still lack a premier holding midfielder.”
“Alexis MacAllister does not rank among the best holding midfielders. Although he demonstrates proficiency in receiving the ball, he encounters significant challenges on defense and possesses a modest amount of speed for that position.
“With regard to the back four, Liverpool could benefit from an exceptional defender who is versatile enough to play in multiple positions, rather than a player specialized in a single position.
“On Sunday, they decided to start Joe Gomez at left back because they believed he would provide more defensive strength. I believe Liverpool could benefit from a right-back occupying that position on the opposing side, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to potentially transition into the midfield.
Liverpool are not prepared for a league championship. Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool supporters are currently cognizant of this.
“They are determined to return to the top four.” “To challenge once more, I believe they require a holding midfielder and a defender of the highest caliber.”
Liverpool trail Pep Guardiola’s squad by three points in the standings prior to their November 25 visit to the champions.
Diaz’s equalizer ensured that Liverpool’s sole loss of the season, a contentious 2-1 loss to Tottenham despite nine man-downs, stands.
