Virgil van Dijk is adamant that Liverpool’s defeat at Luton should not be attributed to officials.
The officials’ ‘wrestling’ that resulted in Van Dijk being left on the ground in the opposition penalty area and the decision not to award a penalty when the ball struck Ross Barkley’s forearm prior to the counterattack that gave the hosts the lead were both sources of discontent for Kop manager Jurgen Klopp. He was enraged.
A stoppage-time equalizer by Luis Diaz earned the Reds a point at Kenilworth Road on a day when the title contenders had squandered a multitude of opportunities against the Premier League newcomers. Diaz entered the game from the substitutes.
However, while Klopp ascribed fault to the referees, Van Dijk abstained from attributing fault to them, asserting that their own error prevented them from securing all three points.
The Dutchman continued, “I cannot comment on the decisions, but I headed the ball and it apparently struck his elbow; I believe, I don’t know.”
“Obviously, the counterattack commences, and they determine it is not a penalty after examining whether it is a penalty or not.” It is a significant advantage for them; they immediately launch a counterattack and score as a result.
“Therefore, while I am uncertain of the precise regulations in this instance, it is not necessary to determine whether or not a penalty is assessed in order to achieve a positive outcome.
“I believe we ourselves had opportunities to achieve a positive outcome, but we failed to do so. The exact same as the previous grappling moment. “He is capable of giving it, but he chose not to.”
Diaz, a Colombian international, notched for the first time since his parents were forcibly abducted on October 28. Although his mother was recovered without delay, his father, Luis Manuel, has yet to be located.
Diaz issued a statement on Sunday night pleading for the safe release of his father after displaying a T-shirt bearing the inscription “Freedom for my father” in the aftermath of his equalizer.
Not only is Diaz himself affected by the difficult circumstances, but so are his teammates and the Liverpool personnel. Van Dijk, however, maintains that Diaz has been attempting to divert attention away from the situation so as not to disrupt himself or the team.
Van Dijk stated, “It was a complete surprise when it occurred prior to our last match against Nottingham; we discussed it, but it ought to provide us with additional motivation.”
“He desires that we not endure the same suffering that he is experiencing.” It is common knowledge that he intends to distill fuel from it.
Amid the ongoing ambiguity, Liverpool players have been doing their utmost to care for Diaz while the Colombian military negotiates the release of his father. Prior to the weekend, the left-leaning ELN rebel organization declared its willingness to release Luis Manuel on the condition that “security guarantees” be provided.
“We hope to retrieve his father as quickly as possible,” Van Dijk continued. (“Imagine it is beyond your comprehension.
“That is the most terrifying aspect; all we can do is pray for him and hope that the authorities and locals are able to locate him safely and return him to his family.”
