In his quest for a Premier League goal, Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund succumbed to the pressure and failed to capitalise on a sitter against Luton.
Following his transfer from Atalanta, the Danish forward was named to the starting XI for the match against the Hatters despite having failed to score a goal in the league. It appeared that he would open his Premier League account early when an obvious opportunity presented itself.
Hojlund was able to connect with a deft cross from Marcus Rashford on the right flank, but his feet appeared to become entangled. From a few yards out, he attempted to knee the ball home but only managed to prod it towards Luton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, who made a solid save as Luton advanced.
Red Devils supporters were enraged by the missed opportunity. One supporter wrote on Twitter, “HORRIFIC miss from Hojlund; he must score!” An additional supporter was not overly enthusiastic. The authors stated: “No way we’re seeing Hojlund carrying Weghorst’s curse of not having a goal in PL.”
Continued criticism was directed at Hojlund and his miss. “I am baffled as to how Hojlund failed to capitalize on that opportunity presented by Marcus Rashford,” stated an additional enthusiast.
Hojlund’s inexplicable error against Luton stands in stark contrast to his Champions League form thus far. The £72 million forward has already scored five goals in just four appearances in Europe, including two in the 4-3 loss to Copenhagen on midweek.
Another enthusiastic supporter emphasized this particular aspect. They responded: “Can Hojlund just pretend he is playing in the UCL?”
Prior to their match against Luton, the squad led by Erik ten Hag had secured a solitary victory in their previous four Premier League encounters at Old Trafford. In their previous league match played at home, they were defeated by formidable rivals Manchester City 3-0.
Hojlund openly supported Ten Hag, who was under pressure after suffering a midweek loss in his native country. He remarked, “A truly exceptional coach. He is extremely attentive to every detail, and he provides me with tremendous assistance, confidence, and support.
“I believe each and every player in the locker room has his back. It appears to be only a matter of time before United achieves success. “Our play during the first thirty minutes of today was among the finest of the entire season.”
After facing Luton, Manchester United will have a two-week hiatus before participating in the most recent round of international matches. On their upcoming assignment, they will be facing Everton.
