The Denmark international has shown signs of promise since joining from Atalanta for £72 million in the summer, especially in the Champions League, where he has already netted five goals.
Conversely, he hasn’t scored a goal at home, where things have been very different for him. His lack of success continued on Saturday as he failed to take advantage of several excellent opportunities against Luton.
According to Scholes, Hojlund has already shown United that he is worthy of a long-term contract at Old Trafford with his gameplay. To fully realize the striker’s potential, he thinks his captain is essential.
“I think Hojlund, I think the kid needs help. I think Fernandes needs to get closer to him. We all know Fernandes can sit in midfield and ping balls, he can do that no problem.
He needs to try and form some sort of partnership with Hojlund and I think that’ll bring him on,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.
Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, is still full of hope that his big summer purchase, who was substituted off the field with ten minutes left in the Hatters game, can keep finding the back of the net.
“Rasmus Hojlund has scored five times in the Champions League,” said Ten Hag. “He has the confidence and the goals will come.
It would be better for composure, for the calmness, for the manager, the coaches and the team if we score early on, but if you don’t you have to keep going.
I have to compliment the team that they kept going, kept organised and didn’t give anything away.”
