After Manchester United defeated Luton Town 1-0 at Old Trafford, defender Harry Maguire expressed his opinion that the Reds still had potential to grow.
Victor Lindelof, our number five’s defensive partner, scored the game-winning goal that separated the two teams on Saturday afternoon, which made Maguire think about the impact that a variety of scorers may have.
The England international stated: “I think, last season, we spoke about [the fact] that we needed to improve on that department.
Obviously it’s nice for the attackers to score numerous amounts of goals, they did last season. Rashy [Marcus Rashford] got loads last year, and we probably should have chipped in a little bit more, us defenders, but it’s important.”
The 30-year-old knows that, as they did against Luton, set pieces will be crucial to this going ahead because they will enable him and the other defenders to get higher up the field and establish themselves in the opposition box.
“We’ve won the game [against Luton] from probably a second phase of a set-play, so they’re important,” Maguire said. “I think, this year, we’ve improved on them because, in my time at this club, we haven’t been good enough at attacking set-plays.”
Even though the Reds won all three points at Old Trafford on Saturday, Maguire wants to make sure they improve even more in the face of upcoming road obstacles.
“We can improve a lot more, for sure,” the defender said. “We had a slow start to the season, but I think our form is slightly turning around.
We’ve got a big game in the Champions League coming up at Galatasaray. But we’ve got to play like we did in Copenhagen and in the Premier League, the next game, Everton, another tough game, physical game, and we’ve got to make sure we’re ready.”
With the victory, the Reds go into the international break in November on a high note. They will aim to maintain this form going into their next match, which takes place at Goodison Park on November 26 at 16:30 GMT against the Toffees.
