Andre Onana is proving his skeptics wrong as he climbs the Golden Glove rankings

After David De Gea’s contract at Manchester United expired and he left the team after 11 years, Andre Onana was the man selected to take his position.

After an interesting start against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which included a clean sheet but widespread criticism from the media for clattering into Sasa Kalajdzic with no penalty being awarded.

When he let a rather easy shot go through his fingers against Bayern Munich, the former Inter Milan goalkeeper’s career came to an end. Things appeared hopeless.

The goalkeeper’s pivotal moment appeared to be the penalty save he performed against FC Copenhagen, which preserved the team’s faint hopes of advancing to the next round.

The Cameroon international has been outstanding for the Red Devils ever then, seeming more and more comfortable in every game.

With time, his passing has also gotten better, and it’s possible that this is because his confidence has increased as a result of his regular saves.

Remarkably, Onana has four clean sheets this season, which is tied for third most in the Premier League, despite United’s dismal start to the campaign.

After a slow start to life in the Premier League, he appears to have turned things around and is currently making his £47 million contract seem like a great deal.

The 27-year-old received harsh criticism after the thrilling 2-1 victory against Brentford in October for failing to stop Mathian Jensen’s shot, which gave the visitors the lead.

“It’s hard enough trying to win matches when your goalkeeper is in good form, but when he’s making errors almost on a weekly basis it makes life very difficult for all concerned,” Garth Crooks wrote in his BBC Sport column.

Several commentators, including Crooks, criticized the goalkeeper, but Onana now appears to be playing at the top of his game, confident, and with a renewed sense of self-belief.

Though it’s not nearly time for these commentators to retract their statements, the goalkeeper never intended to become a recluse and lose faith in himself.

Onana faced the media after making the error against Bayern, which ought to have been a major indication that his faith in his own skills would never waver.

The goalie is deserving of praise for his recent improvement in performance and appears to be a future United goalkeeper.
