The VAR controversy in the Premier League continued on Sunday when Manchester City were awarded a penalty in their match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Pep Guardiola’s squad was welcomed to west London by the Blues in an effort to build on Monday night’s thrilling 4-1 victory over Tottenham. However, after a dynamic start by the team led by Mauricio Pochettino, the match’s first critical moment transpired in the twentieth minute.
As a result of Marc Cucurella’s penalty for bringing Erling Haaland to the ground inside the six-yard box, the visitors were awarded a penalty. Before the validation of referee Anthony Taylor’s ruling was completed, the result was evaluated through VAR.
Cucurella’s tackle on Haaland to the ground followed Jeremy Doku’s delivery of a cross was confirmed by replays. However, the striker seemed to have removed the defender’s shirt mere seconds before the incident occurred.
Haaland scored his first goal in a match against Chelsea after converting the penalty kick; nevertheless, Jamie Carragher of Sky Sports expressed his dissent regarding the penalty kick decision.
“I find that to be unfavorable, as the odds appear to be six to one and half a dozen between Cucurella and Haaland,” he stated. Despite Curiella’s initial hostility and determination toward Haaland, Haaland ultimately captures her as well.
“VAR did not observe the beginning of the struggle; he gains the upper hand with his shirt, but then retreats; therefore, this is not the correct decision.” Chelsea is being judged extremely harshly, given that VAR only witnessed the conclusion of the struggle. I agree wholeheartedly that it is harsh.”
Haaland’s opener was fortunately cancelled out by the astute header of Thiago Silva, a 39-year-old Chelsea defender, and Raheem Sterling, a former City star, added a second-half goal.
