Manchester United defeated Luton Town 1-0 at Old Trafford Wednesday, bouncing back from their devastating Champions League midweek loss at FC Copenhagen.
With rumors that manager Erik ten Hag’s position was in jeopardy, the Red Devils were anxious to win before the international break.
Before the match, TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil warned that a defeat to Luton may result in the Dutchman losing his job. The players duly replied, with Victor Lindelof scoring the game’s lone goal in the 59th minute.
The 29-year-old scored his first goal for United in nearly three years after failing to score since December 2020, and it turned out to be a pivotal one.
Both Lindelof’s international teammate and former Red Devil Anthony Elanga, as well as Man United captain Bruno Fernandes, responded to Lindelof’s performance and goal on Instagram, and it’s easy to say they were impressed.
The defender made three clearances, blocked a shot, intercepted a pass, and won a tackle during his 117 touches and 102 completions out of 108 passes attempted.
Alongside Harry Maguire, Lindelof was one of the top players on the field and won three of his four aerial duels and all 100 of his ground duels.
Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho wasted great opportunities to score goals, but the Sweden international saved their blushes. The attackers were not impressive.
The three players named above should pick up some tips from Lindelof, who gave the Hatters goalie no chance with his superb finish after a loose ball in the box.
If Man United had had some clinical forwards on the field, they would have scored at least three goals, but instead he chose to blast the ball into the roof of the net.
