Mason Greenwood joined Getafe on loan at the beginning of the season, and the Spanish team is already hoping to extend his spell there, according to sources. However, given that a second loan agreement is thought to be more likely than a permanent transfer, Manchester United might have to ask for more money in exchange for providing his services.

After a six-month internal inquiry into his behavior, the Red Devils decided to sever connections with Greenwood, who was moved off to Getafe in the summer. The athlete was the subject of a criminal prosecution that was dropped in February despite accusations of attempted rape and assault.

According to The Sun, Greenwood will be a United player until June 2025; nonetheless, Getafe hopes to keep him at Estadio Coliseum. “Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill,” a source told the British newspaper.

“The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life. They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so — and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone.”

It would be in United’s best interests to agree on a loan fee with Getafe in order to enable them recover some funds if they were to accept a second season on loan. Right now, Getafe is just paying a “small contribution” of his weekly salary of £75,000, with United picking up the tab.

The La Liga team, meanwhile, did not fulfill their obligation to pay a loan fee under their current contract. If Greenwood stays with Manchester United until his contract expires in eighteen months, Man Utd will pay him an additional £6 million in total.

Since joining Getafe, the English forward has encountered a range of responses. Since ending his loan move in September, he has made ten appearances for the team in all competitions and scored three goals.

When he made his Getafe debut on September 17 in a 3-2 La Liga victory over Osasuna, he had been out of action for nearly eighteen months. His first goal for the team, in a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo in October, was his first since January 2022.
