Liverpool rebuilt their midfield over the summer, but we wanted to know what’s become of the players that didn’t wind up moving to Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp will be ecstatic with the contributions that Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis MacAllister have all made since joining the club, and Wataru Endo has also demonstrated his astuteness as a purchase.
However, what became of the athletes that were overlooked during the summer? We have evaluated the progress of seven athletes whom they purportedly intended to acquire elsewhere.
Moises Caicedo
At the beginning of August, there was a contentious dispute between Chelsea and Liverpool over Caicedo, which was marked by escalating transfer fees and inflated egos on both parties.
The Ecuadorian international arrived at Stamford Bridge for an unprecedented £115 million, but in his inaugural match, he conceded a penalty against West Ham.
However, Caicedo, similar to the rest of the Chelsea squad, has progressed gradually under Mauricio Pochettino’s tutelage. A competent player in spite of the exorbitant fee.
Romeo Lavia
Liverpool desired Lavia throughout the entire summer, but Chelsea defeated them to another midfielder while the Reds negotiated a transfer fee for the Belgium international.
Although Liverpool ultimately reached a £60 million agreement for Lavia, their indecision gave the 19-year-old the impression that Chelsea was more interested in signing him, thereby enabling Todd Boehly to acquire him.
Lavia has yet to make his debut for his new club subsequent to sustaining an ankle injury in early September.
Kephren Thuram
Although Liverpool had a valid interest in Thuram, the matter remained in the realm of negotiations between the Reds and Nice.
“The primary issue with Thuram was that Liverpool deemed the package, including transfer fee and salary, to be too expensive,” transfer insider Fabrizio Romano explained on the Born and Red podcast.
“When Liverpool spoke about Thuram, they were preoccupied with a multitude of concerns.”
Thuram has stated that he has remained at Nice voluntarily since the summer, but he may be amenable to a transfer in the future.
“I believe I’ve had a strong start to the season,” stated the midfielder. “Of course, the team has had an outstanding start to the season. I have made progress on certain elements of my game. With respect to the transfer window events, I made the decision to remain.
“My objective was to secure further advancements at Nice and develop further as a player for this club.” It truly brought a smile to my face to be associated with each of these organizations in every direction.
“It demonstrates that I am proceeding in the right direction, but as I previously stated, I always intended to remain here.”
Federico Chiesa
Since dazzling during Italy’s Euro 2020 victory a few years ago, Chiesa’s career has stagnated, and Juventus reportedly considered selling the forward this summer.
In addition to having four goals in eleven Serie A appearances this season, he was connected with moves to Arsenal and Newcastle in January; therefore, should Klopp decide to pursue Chiesa once more, he would face stiff competition.
Cheick Doucoure
Doucoure, who excelled at Crystal Palace during the previous campaign, was strongly associated with a transfer to Anfield in the closing weeks of the transfer window prior to his decision to remain at Selhurst Park.
The Mail international ranks highly among his Premier League peers in challenges, interceptions, clearances, and ball control in the defensive third, despite Palace’s inconsistent start to the season.
It appears inevitable that one of the major clubs will acquire him at some juncture, given his young age of 23. Might it remain Liverpool?
Piero Hincapie
As a member of Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen squad, Hincapie has established himself as one of the preeminent youth defenders in the history of football.
Furthermore, Manuel Sierra, the agent representing the Ecuador international, has affirmed that Liverpool maintained a significant interest in his client during the previous transfer window and continues to do so heading into January.
Sierra told Bolavip, “Liverpool were interested in him [Hincapie], but at that time they decided to invest in the midfielder.” “They are conversing similarly to other clubs regarding January; it will cost no less than €50 million.”
Given Leverkusen’s potential to disrupt Bayern’s Bundesliga dominance, it is highly improbable that they would sell Hincapie for a nominal fee. This is a potential offer that could be revived during the summer.
Benjamin Pavard
Ancestralized at Bayern Munich, Pavard was connected with Liverpool and Manchester United during the summer. However, the World Cup champion ultimately joined Inter Milan.
Prior to his recent kneecap dislocation in a resounding victory over Atalanta, he had made nine appearances for his new club. He has since been declared out for a minimum of four weeks.
