With over one-third of the Premier League season completed, it’s time to take stock and examine some of the major statistics that have emerged thus far.
Manchester United hasn’t had the best of beginnings in 2023/24, but we enter the international break as the form team in the Premier League, having won four of our past five games.
With 21 points from 12 games, we are sixth in the table, seven points behind defending champions Manchester City, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa all vying for position.
Our past two triumphs, against Fulham and Luton Town, were both 1-0, and Andre Onana is doing well in his drive to replace David De Gea as the Premier League’s Golden Glove winner.
The award is granted to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets at the end of the season, and those two shutouts, combined with blanks for Wolves and Burnley earlier in the season, mean the Cameroonian is closing in on Sam Johnstone and Nick Pope.
The Crystal Palace and Newcastle United goalkeepers presently lead the league with five clean sheets, while Onana is tied for fourth with Alisson, Ederson, David Raya, and Guglielmo Vicario.
United’s successful first season under Erik ten Hag was founded on not allowing the opposition through, and De Gea finished the season unbroken in 17 of his 38 matches, but as Andre was quick to point out, it is a team effort.
“You improve with the team. When the team is winning, you will improve as well. At the end of the day, it’s about the team,” Onana told club media recently.
“I always say a clean sheet is not for me. It’s for all of us, you know? I’m the big man in the back wall. I manage my defenders, you know. We always have to improve.”
Official statistics highlight how the former Internazionale man is adjusting to life in the Premier League, as his 45 saves in the first dozen games are only matched by three keepers: Wes Foderingham, Bernd Leno, and Neto.
According to FBRef.com, Onana has saved 76.7 percent of the shots he has faced, with just Alisson and Vicario stopping more goalbound efforts.
