Scott McTominay, a standout for Manchester United, was left indignant after Scotland’s 2-2 draw at Georgia. The midfielder described the conduct of his opponents towards the officials in the Euro 2024 qualifying match on Thursday as a “disgrace.”
Scotland, who have already qualified for the tournament in Germany next summer, are attempting to maintain their momentum en route there. Prior to traveling to Tbilisi, Steve Clarke’s squad had suffered three consecutive losses, including friendly defeats at the hands of England and France.
It appeared that Georgia would extend its losing streak to four matches. Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, a standout for Napoli, scored the game’s opening goal in the fifteenth minute.
Shortly after halftime, McTominay, who has been in outstanding goal-scoring form for both club and country, equalized the score for Scotland. Clarke appeared to face yet another frustrating evening as Kvaratskhelia swiftly reestablished the hosts’ advantage.
However, in the third minute of stoppage time, Lawrence Shankland scored the equalizer to preserve their chances of ruling Group A. Following the match, McTominay engaged in an interview with ViaPlay, during which he primarily focused on his assessment of what he perceived to be play-acting by his Georgia counterparts.
The 26-year-old stated, “They have some very talented footballers, but the manner in which they provoked the referee tonight was a disgrace.”
“Such is football; I suppose that’s the way things progress. Although there are some dissatisfied individuals in the locker room, I believe this is an opportunity that can be developed so that we can return twice. They ought to take action against athletes who falsely claim to be injured when in fact they are not.
“It’s a tough one to say, but spending the entire afternoon writhing around and sobbing like infants is not football. “On our end, all we wanted to do was continue playing, while they were significantly provoking the referee.”
McTominay has scored three goals this season for United. However, he has also been in fine form for Scotland; he scored his seventh goal in the Euro qualifying campaign on Thursday.
He acknowledged that the eventual attainment of a point in the Scotland locker room evoked some relief. McTominay further stated, “That is accurate. There have been evenings when we played exceptionally well, and there will undoubtedly be nights when we didn’t play as well.
“When we are not performing well, it is crucial that we remain united, do not concede the game, and strive to win. “It is about maintaining composure, selecting appropriate passes, and exercising a modicum of patience.”
