Darwin Nunez once more delivered the ball as Uruguay defeated Argentina in the wee hours of Friday morning to claim another historic victory.
A month ago, Nunez was instrumental in Marcelo Bielsea’s squad’s 2-1 victory over Brazil. For the first time in twenty-one years, Uruguay vanquished the five-time World Cup champions on account of a goal and an assist.
La Celeste have now defeated Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions. A 2-0 victory was secured in Buenos Aires, the tally completed by Nunez in the 87th minute to secure all three points. The triumph put an end to Argentina’s perfect start in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as Uruguay moved to the bottom of the standings.
Nunez maintained the dazzling form he has demonstrated for Liverpool thus far this season, accumulating seven goals and six assists. El Pais, a Uruguayan publication, rated the 24-year-old’s performance as eight out of ten. The assessment of his performance read: “When he was one-on-one with Dibu Martínez in the first half, he had an unmistakable opportunity to score. His errant projectile found its way into the hair. In the complement, he exacted vengeance and achieved success. He increased the score to 2-0. Extremely dedicated to applying pressure to the final Albiceleste line.”
El Pais reported following the match that Argentine captain Lionel Messi was enraged “with the youths” on his team.
In the interim, La Red 21 documented how Nunez posed an ever-present threat to Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister during the course of the match.
The former Benfica forward failed to capitalize on a decent opportunity in the first half, but ESPN detailed how he utilized “speed and strength” to set up the moment. And when he did manage to create another opportunity in the dying moments, Nunez accelerated his Argentina’s attack with devastating velocity before “feigning and finishing against [Emi] Martínez to close the game.”
