Victor Lindelof, a defender for Manchester United, didn’t have a great night as Sweden suffered a devastating loss to Azerbaijan.
Despite defeating the same team 5-0 in March, Sweden suffered its first loss against Azerbaijan, falling 3-0 in Baku.
Given that Janne Anderson is leaving her position this week, it sounds like heads have dropped.
Renant Dadashov found Emin Mahmudov to volley home in the third minute, punishing Lindelof early for a moment of inattention. To make things worse for the Swedes, Dadashov added his name to the scoresheet after three minutes. When Robin Olsen was long-rangedly lobbed in the 89th minute, the humiliation continued.
In Group F, Sweden was already eliminated from contention because neither Austria nor Belgium could advance through the play-offs.
Lindelof’s contribution to Azerbaijan’s opening goal and Sweden’s overall performance were met with criticism by the Swedish press. The center back received criticism from Fotboll Skanalen for giving up the ball just outside the penalty area prior to the first goal.
The same journal also gave Lindelof a match rating of 1/5 and said of him: “The captain put his team in a tough spot when he conceded 1-0 to Azerbaijan early on. An usually weak international match by the centre-back.”
In a United shirt, Lindelof also receives his fair share of criticism. He described Richard Arnold’s decision to quit the club after 16 years as “sad” this week.
