Cole Palmer on his England debut – A rare moment of individual quality on a perfunctory night

At Wembley, in a European Championship qualifier, the Three Lions defeated Malta 2-0, and Cole Palmer made his senior debut for England.

For the last thirty minutes, Palmer came off the bench and positioned himself on the left of the three players behind Harry Kane, the striker. Palmer seemed right at home, making several deft touches and passes during his time on the field, and England improved almost away.

In stoppage time, he wonderfully beat his full-back after cutely setting up Trent Alexander-Arnold for a nice shot, only to have his center blocked behind for a corner. For the Three Lions, who were already qualified, it was a meaningless night, but it was also an exceptional individual event.

Conor Gallagher and Jordan Henderson shared the starting midfield duties at Wembley. England took the lead through an own goal in a first half devoid of incident, but they were unable to muster any forward play against the European underdogs, who themselves threatened with a couple of strong long-range shots.

At halftime, Palmer replaced Marcus Rashford in place of Gallagher, one of two players removed from the game. After a deft move, Kane extended England’s lead, and Declan Rice’s third goal was severely disallowed for offside against Kane.

On Monday night, England travels to play North Macedonia.

Tonight, France was defeated 2-0 in Austria in the Under-21 European Championship qualification match, which produced an unexpected outcome. Lesley Ugochukwu played the entire ninety minutes, but France’s perfect qualification run came to an end when a goal in each half did the damage. They are still at the top of Group H after the loss.

In a U20 Euro Elite qualifier, Portugal Under-20s defeated Norway 2-1 with Diego Moreira, a player on loan at Lyon, playing 83 minutes. The goals were all scored before Moreira left the game.
