The international squattings on Friday night of Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana introduced two new injury concerns to Manchester United.
Following an unintentional collision with England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold during England’s routine 2-0 home victory over Malta, Rashford, age 26, was substituted. The forward, who had not scored for United in over two months, was treated by medical personnel but was unable to continue; Cole Palmer of Chelsea was substituted in place of him for his England debut.
Onana, a goalkeeper for United, was substituted with less than ten minutes remaining in Cameroon’s 3-0 victory over Mauritius. The £47 million acquisition appeared to be in discomfort as the World Cup qualifying match neared its conclusion, and he substituted Fabrice Ondoa with a limp after consulting with his country’s physiotherapists.
Since joining from Inter Milan in August, Onana has appeared in every competitive match for the Red Devils. However, a string of high-profile errors that have contributed to United’s dismal start to the season have earned him criticism.
Rashford is also experiencing a difficult stretch, and his collision with Alexander-Arnold will not help. While attempting to seize the ball, the 26-year-old was inadvertently eliminated by Liverpool right-back Alexander-Arnold. Rashford collapsed to the ground in agony, having been unable to exert any influence during the match.
His and Onana’s potential absences increase the number of injury concerns United manager Erik ten Hag is already confronting. Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund were recently compelled to withdraw from the Danish national team.
Former defender Jonny Evans was ruled out for the “next few weeks” and subsequently withdrew from Northern Ireland’s squad prior to last Saturday’s nerve-wracking 1-0 home victory over Luton. Ten Hag’s defense is at its most depleted, with center-back Lisandro Martinez joining left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia in the treatment room.
Additionally, right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was unable to play against Luton due to illness. Casemiro is not anticipated to make his midfield return until January, following a lackluster start to the season.
Positively, Amad and Kobbie Mainoo, both in their youth, are approaching their return. Following the international break, Manchester United will travel to Everton and Newcastle, in addition to a Champions League match they must win away at Galatasaray, who defeated them at Old Trafford last month.
