Raheem Sterling of Chelsea has drawn a lot of attention for not being chosen for the England national team, and Graeme Souness has asserted that the Blues winger is superior to Jack Grealish.
Under Gareth Southgate, Grealish is now a consistent member of the England team roster. Conversely, Sterling has been ignored and hasn’t been picked again despite his strong Chelsea play.
Sterling has played an important role in England’s resurgence under Southgate. However, he is no longer being considered, which has perplexed many pundits. Alan Shearer recently praised Sterling as “superb,” perfectly expressing the mood of the football world right now.
Additionally, former Scotland player Souness expresses his shock at Sterling’s lack of consideration in favor of Grealish in his piece for The Mail.
“If you’re a full back, would you rather play against Sterling or Jack Grealish? I think 10 out of 10 would rather play against Grealish. Sterling is more dangerous than him. Defenders are terrified of pace and directness. Grealish threatens to go down the line, does a couple of stepovers and then cuts inside and plays the ball square nearly every time. Sterling goes at you and, as a defender, you’re praying you have a team-mate covering you,” Souness said.
“We’re seeing less and less of Grealish at Manchester City, and more of Jeremy Doku. Would you want to play against Doku? No, because he’s more like Sterling.”
After joining Chelsea for £45 million from Manchester City, Sterling has developed into one of the team’s senior statesmen despite the Blues being a fairly young squad.
He really cannot, as Souness points out, force his way back into the international conversation at this time, and that seems strange.
If Sterling continues to perform well, Southgate will have an issue come the Euros.
