Graeme Souness believes Chelsea’s £45 million player is ‘more dangerous’ than Jack Grealish

There has been much discussion about Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling not being selected for England, and Graeme Souness believes the Blues winger is better than Jack Grealish.

Grealish is now a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s England side. Sterling, on the other hand, has been sidelined and, despite his strong form for Chelsea, has not been selected again.

Sterling has played an important role in England’s resurgence under Southgate. However, he is no longer being considered, which has perplexed many pundits. Alan Shearer recently praised Sterling as “superb,” perfectly expressing the mood of the football world right now.

In his blog for The Mail, former Scotland star Souness expresses surprise that Sterling is being ignored for Grealish.

“If you’re a full back, would you rather play against Sterling or Jack Grealish? I think 10 out of 10 would rather play against Grealish. Sterling is more dangerous than him. Defenders are terrified of pace and directness. Grealish threatens to go down the line, does a couple of stepovers and then cuts inside and plays the ball square nearly every time. Sterling goes at you and, as a defender, you’re praying you have a team-mate covering you,” Souness said.

“We’re seeing less and less of Grealish at Manchester City, and more of Jeremy Doku. Would you want to play against Doku? No, because he’s more like Sterling.”

Chelsea paid £45 million to get Sterling from Manchester City, and he has since matured into one of the club’s senior statesmen in a young Blues squad.

However, he just cannot push his way back into the world picture right now, which, as Souness points out, appears strange.

If Sterling continues to perform well in Europe, Southgate will have a difficult time.
