The father of the Liverpool winger Luis Diaz refuted reports that his son was pressing for a transfer to the Nou Camp, despite headlines claiming he was “dreaming” of Barcelona.
With the club’s recent show of support for the family, it might seem premature for Diaz Sr. to advocate for his son to leave Anfield.
As they are ready to spend Christmas in Merseyside, Luis Manuel Diaz, his wife Cilenis Marulanda, and their extended family arrived in Liverpool on Saturday morning on a private jet that the team hired.
However, press about Diaz’s “dream” to play for Barcelona also surfaced over the weekend, thanks to an interview that Diaz Sr. did with Win Sports in Colombia.
Nevertheless, there was no “transfer claim” or “transfer warning,” and Diaz was in no way “tipped to ditch Anfield.”
As a lifelong Barcelona fan, like many South Americans, Diaz Sr. did acknowledge that the 26-year-old’s “dream” would be to play for the team.
But it was an honest response to a straight inquiry, with no hint that he was trying to make a play.
He said via Sport Witness: “The truth is that I know very little about Barcelona at the moment.
It is true that Luis is a loyal Barcelona fan and it would be his dream to go there.
So far I would like to thank Porto and Liverpool for the way they welcomed him and received him.
Luis is a player who finds it easy to win [fans] over because of the way he is, because of his humility, his work, his dedication. He is a very disciplined player, thank God.
There would be no problem if Luis came to Barcelona because it is a top team and one of the best in the world.”
There is no anticipation that Diaz’s father will leave Liverpool very soon, despite the fact it is not ideal that he is talking about other teams in a public interview.
It is a fact of life that most South American players have dreams of playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona.
